IVR, Interactive Voice Response:

Online (CAWI):

The data quality problem with single-mode research is self-selection bias. Online surveys over-represent highly satisfied and highly dissatisfied respondents, because those are the people motivated to seek out and complete a survey; phone surveys under-represent younger demographics; and any single-mode approach creates a skewed sample.
Multi-mode data collection reduces this problem by actively managing who gets reached through which channel. Respondents who don’t answer online invitations get called, respondents who miss the first phone call get an IVR callback attempt, and respondents who prefer to complete at their own pace get routed to the web.

Designing a multi-mode study
A well-designed multi-mode data collection program follows four principles.
- Define the quota architecture first. Before choosing modes, define what the representative sample needs to look like. Which demographics, geographies, or segments need to be represented? The quota structure drives the mode design, not the other way around.
- Match mode to audience, not to convenience. The most common mistake in multi-mode design is choosing modes based on what’s easiest to set up rather than what will actually reach the target respondents. Seniors over 65 need phone. Rural populations need phone and busy professionals may need online.
- Suspend and resume across modes. A well-configured multi-mode platform allows a study to begin in one mode and resume in another. A respondent who starts on IVR can be transferred to CATI when a complex question requires a live interviewer; a respondent who begins online and abandons can receive a CATI callback.
- Monitor in real time. Multi-mode data collection requires real-time monitoring of quota progress across every mode. If CATI is under-performing on a specific demographic cell, the system should alert the project team so they can adjust sample allocation or activate additional modes before the deadline passes.
